Seven times Targa Tasmania winner Jim Richards
has been named as an official ambassador for
Queensland’s first ever tarmac rally, the SunCoast Classic to be held in
July this year.
Richards, who is a seven times Bathurst 1000 winner as well, has also
been named as an ambassador for the Classic Adelaide Rally, which along
with the SunCoast Classic is run by leading rally organiser Silverstone
Events.
“The SunCoast Classic will be a tremendous, with roads that will truly
challenge all the drivers and a truly superb location,” said Jim
Richards.
Richards, a recent inductee into the Australian Motorsport Hall of Fame,
will compete in more than ten tarmac rally events around the world in
2007 and believes that tarmac rallies are a safe and exciting form of
motor racing.
“Obviously motorsport can be dangerous, but the SunCoast Classic and
Classic Adelaide give competitors a safe and controlled environment to
drive their vehicles”, said Richards.
“It is not about hooning around streets in cars that are unsafe and
driven by amateurs, these cars are professionally prepared and driven by
specially licensed drivers”.
“Hopefully we can educate people about safe driving practices and
encourage anyone who wants to drive their vehicles at a competitive
level to only do it under safe and controlled conditions”, added
Richards.
Rally organising Silverstone Events has been the driving force behind
the Classic Adelaide rally event since its inception ten years ago and
the event is now considered one of the best tarmac rallies in the world.
It’s a reputation that has really impressed Richards and the reason why
he has agreed to become an ambassador for both Silverstone organised
rallies.
“Silverstone is a world-class organisation, I compete in a lot of events
around the world and Classic Adelaide is easily one of the most
enjoyable and best organised”, Richards said.
“I will only ever give my support to professional organisations that are
run by honest and good people, everyone at Silverstone is just that”,
stated Richards. |

Jim Richards will be aiming to win the inaugural SunCoast Classic to add
to his seven Bathurst 1000 and seven Targa Tasmania victories.
